    Maetierra

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    12 x 750 ml

Breads, Cured Meat, Duck breast, Hard Cheese, Red Meat, Veal roasted

Produced at Maetierra, a winery owned by Vintae, this is a project based on four vineyards: Two are old-vine tempranillo dating to the 1920s and ’50s; one is garnacha planted in the 1920s; the fourth is graciano planted in the 1980s. They come together in a pretty red, a tight, silken mouthful of wine. This has the ripeness of cherries in syrup, but it’s savory and austere. There’s a lot of American oak in the aroma, needing air to relent and reveal the lush, warm, rich sweetness of fruit, even as the tannins continue to keep it dry. A juicy Rioja for steak.

    Tasting Notes:

3 x Monte Real Rioja Gran Reserva by Bodegas Riojanas 2001
It is interesting, as the 2011 Monte Real was probably raised in a bit less French oak than the 2004, but it shows a bit more of its cedary influence than the ’04, which is probably reflective of the French casks being a bit younger than they were in ’04. This was a ripe and very high quality vintage in Rioja and the Monte Real Gran Reserva shows lovely promise, with the nose offering up scents of black cherries, sweet dark berries, cigar smoke, dark soil tones, lovely Rioja spice tones, cloves, smoky US oak and quite a bit of cedary elements from the French casks also used in the elevage. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a lovely base of soil, very good grip, moderate tannins and a long, vibrant and focused finish. This is very good and I may be underrating it just a touch, but I like the mix of US and French oak better in both the 1998 and 2004 vintages that flanked this very good 2001 in the tasting. But, the depth of fruit, soil drive and length here are first class.

3 x Monte Real Rioja Gran Reserva by Bodegas Riojanas 2004
The 2004 vintage has produced a very fine bottle of Monte Real Gran Reserva. The wine is starting to show a bit of this cuvée’s youthful plumminess on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up a fine blend of black cherries, plums, Cuban cigars, fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, a touch of celery seed, toasted coconut and a really lovely base of soil elements. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very classy in profile, with a fine core, moderate tannins and impressive length and grip on the poised, complex finish. This is still a good five years away from its true plateau of maturity, but it is evolving beautifully and will be a top flight vintage of Monte Real.

  6. New La Dula Garnacha de Altura by Sierra de Toloño 2018

    US$299.94

    Sierra de Tolono

    Rioja (Spain), Spain (Spain)

    6 x 750 ml

Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Risotto, Veal roasted, White Meat

"Sandra Bravo is a Garnacha lover who's keen to preserve old parcels of this special grape in Rioja. This comes from four different high-altitude sites, all of which are at least 60 years' old, and is a stunning first release, which emphasizes structure, freshness and fruit intensity rather than oak. Pale, refined and elegant, it's a wine that justifies the variety's description as the "Pinot of the south". "
